The WTA Championships are almost here! This is Istanbul's last year as host and here's hoping that the event is just as big and spectacular as the previous two have been. Just a reminder that the event is an 8 woman field, consisting of those who have amassed the most points this year. The women are divided into two groups of four, each playing the other three women in a round robin system. The two women with the best results progress into a semi final, whereby the women with best results from one group plays the woman with the second best from the other and vice versa. The winners then progress into the final. Maria Sharapova had qualified as the 3rd best player this year, but was forced to withdraw her place due to shoulder bursitis. Kerber therefore qualified, whilst Wozniacki and Stephens act as alternates.
The Red Group consists of the following:
(Rank)
1 Williams:
Titles in 2013- 10
Previous best result- W (2001/2009/2012)
Head to head Williams- Radwanska 7-0 Kvitova 4-0 Kerber 2-1
4 Radwanska:
Titles in 2013- 3
Previous best result- SF (2012)
Head to head Radwanska- Kvitova 1-4 Kerber 5-3
6 Kvitova:
Titles in 2013- 2
Previous best result- W (2011)
Head to head Kvitova- Kerber 2-2
9 Kerber:
Titles in 2013- 1
Previous best result- RR (2012)
In this group there are two clear big hitters and two counter punchers. All 4 players have won tournaments this autumn and are in great form. Williams should win all 3 matches, whilst I suspect Kvitova to come through in second place.
